FireLight Policies

FireLight Statement of Faith

We believe in one God, the creator of all things, who exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. “As Jesus was coming up out of the water, He saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’” Mark 1:10-11

We believe that salvation comes only through the free gift of God, made evident in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6

We believe that the Bible is the written Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and that it is the final authority for Christian faith and life. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

We believe that the role of a Christian is to glorify God and to be His example on earth. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Matthew 22:37-39 and “Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.” 1 John 2:6


Student Code of Conduct

  • I will respect, listen to, and obey FireLight teachers and assistants.

  • I will respect my peers and their personal space.

  • I will treat church property with care and will help clean-up with a positive attitude.

  • I will not bring technology (phones, iPods, iPads, tablets, cameras, computers) to class unless required to do so. If I do, the item may be confiscated and held until the end of co-op.

  • I will abide by the dress code and dress modestly.

    • Pants/shorts/skirts will adequately cover posterior and will be without excessive or revealing rips.

    • No exposed midriffs.

    • No spaghetti straps.

    • No excessively tight or revealing clothing.

    • No inappropriate wording or symbols.

    • Modest swimwear on water outings.

  • I will respond appropriately to correction. Perfection is not required, but positive and lasting response to correction is expected.

  • I understand that failure to abide by the Code of Conduct will result in either temporary or permanent removal from the group.


Membership in Other Cooperative Groups Policy

Though there are many homeschool co-ops* in the area, they differ in their philosophy of education, schedule, style, or requirements for membership. A number of these groups have waiting lists. Because co-ops are a limited resource for North Florida, FireLight, in conjunction with several other area groups, asks that its member families not "double dip" and maintain membership in more than one co-op at the same time. Families who participate in more than one co-op sometimes find that events overlap, educational philosophies differ, or the increasingly busy schedule results in exhaustion. Membership in more than one co-op also takes a spot that could be filled by a family with no group affiliation. We request that families not participate in additional homeschool co-ops while they are members of FireLight.

If you are applying to FireLight and are currently a member of another co-op, you are asked to discontinue membership with that co-op upon acceptance into FireLight.          

*A co-op would be defined as one in which membership is limited, all students are homeschoolers, parental participation is mandatory, and weekly attendance is expected. Activities such as book clubs, scouts, paid tutoring, and online classes are not considered educational co-ops.


Attendance Commitment Policy

We understand that FireLight counts on the adult members to be able to function and that by joining we are committing to attending co-op group days for the entire school year.

Barring illness, emergency, or a rarely scheduled event, we will make every effort to be at every co-op group day.

FireLight co-op meets 12 Fridays in the fall (Aug. - Dec.) and 12 Fridays in the winter/spring (Jan. - Apr.) and the dates are published in the summer. FireLight generally has one Friday off per month, this is a great time to schedule appointments, trips, etc. without affecting your commitment.


Drop Off Policy

FireLight is not a drop off program. Parents are required to remain on campus with their children for the duration of the co-op group day.  Every adult’s help is needed to ensure that classes and activities run smoothly and efficiently. This means that all parents will be involved in classes in some way for the majority of the time at co-op.

Parents will have at least one hour of break time - a good opportunity to fellowship with other parents or to catch up on your reading or planning. 

**Older students may be dropped off when younger siblings are ill IF the parent asks another parent to take responsibility for their child. You must indicate this in your absence notification.


llness & Absence Policy

Fall and Winter are seasons when illness can run rampant through families, schools, and groups. As a result, we ask that each parent considers the well-being of the group and not bring a child who is displaying ANY symptoms of illness, even a cold or cough.

If your child has been ill within the last 48 hours, please refrain from bringing him to co-op.

Since several member families have multiple children, one child who gets sick at group could leave a family sick for the next month. We expect there will be some absences due to illness or family emergency. Since every parent's presence is integral at co-op each week, it is very important that you notify your co-teacher AND fill in the absence form on our website as soon as possible.


Communication Policy

The primary means of communication between FireLight members is by way of the website and e-mail and text. Our web address is www.FireLightJax.org. The site is password protected for the safety of our members, so please do not share your password with others.

Make a note that all e-mail from the group will have an address of lifeline@homeschool-life.com. Make sure this address is in your contact list and not marked as spam to ensure delivery of your messages.

In the event of cancellation of a group meeting date, a group text will come from Remind.

Beginning with Fall 2018, students with e-mail addresses may login to the website. To give your student this access, add their e-mail address and a password on your profile.


Background Check  & Campus Security Policy

In an effort to safeguard our group to the best of our ability, all adults who attend on co-op days (parents, guardians, grandparents, hired teachers, etc.) will complete a bi-annual background check with FireLight's provider, Verified Volunteers. For most families, this means Mom completes the background check application. For some, where Dad may fill in or possibly teach a class, he, too, will require a check. A link will be provided to purchase the background check.

FireLight members should use assigned classrooms only. Our assigned classrooms are unlocked for the duration of FireLight use.


Dress Code Policy

We want FireLight to be a place where young hearts and minds are protected from a world that often asks kids to grow up too quickly. Our children are growing and developing, and our standards of dress for them as well as for ourselves should reflect modesty. The dress code is outlined in the Student Code of Conduct above.


Smoking & Technology Policies

There is no smoking on the church campus or during FireLight field trips and events off campus.

The use of electronic devices for students is NOT allowed UNLESS required by class. This includes iPods and mp3 players, Kindles, iPads or tablets, cameras, computers and cell phones. This applies to adults while in class so that we are able to give our full attention to co-op.


Facility Use Policy

We will respect all areas of the campus: the buildings, playgrounds, sidewalks, and planted areas. Any area of Facility that FireLight uses needs to be tidied and ready for the next Facility event.

STUDENTS and teachers should tidy up after each class. This includes wiping tables, chairs, whiteboards, and straightening tables/chairs. Additionally, the floors should be vacuumed of any stray crumbs or debris.

We are blessed with the provision of a wonderful facility for our group activities, and we thank God for allowing us to utilize the church property. In turn, we are committed to respecting the facilities and grounds any time we use them.  As good stewards, we shall leave the areas we use looking better than we found them. 


Field Trip & Events Policy

All payments are to be made through PayPal at time of sign-up. If payment is not received, you risk losing your spot. Field trip payments are non-refundable, unless FireLight or the venue cancels the trip. Be prepared. If you are unable to make it, please let the trip/event organizer know. Know how to contact the coordinator. Know the location and have directions. Arrive a minimum of 10 minutes early so that we may enter as a group. Follow all rules of the host site. Guests (grandparents, etc.) are welcome on a space available basis. All families agree to plan or help plan one field trip, gathering, or event per year. Sign-up will happen at the mandatory summer parent meeting. Anyone is welcome to suggest and organize a trip at any time, so long as the FireLight rules and those of the host site are followed. Submit a request through the website calendar. 


Financial Policy

July 10 - Registration and Renewal Membership Fees are due.

Aug. 1 - Fall Term Class and Supply Fees are due.

December 1  - Winter Term Class and Supply Fees are due.

Field trip and event fees are due upon sign up.

Costs are posted on the website.

All payments will be via PayPal via your Balance link on the website. If needed, our PayPal address is payments@FireLightJax.org; make note of what you are paying for.

All monies collected will have the PayPal transaction and percentage costs added. This is 2.2% + 0.30 per transaction and rounded to the nearest $0.25.

We utilize PayPal because of the tremendous time savings it offers us. The small fee is more than made up for by the savings in paying an accountant! All payments are non-refundable. Personal supplies are yours to keep, however. 


Visitor Policy

Visitors are permitted only with prior approval from leadership. Teachers need notification in order to prepare accordingly for a guest student. On occasion, other children (nieces, nephews, etc.) may attend with a member adult. Visitors should not be left unsupervised at any time.


Failure to Comply 

I understand that failure to comply with FireLight policies can result in a discussion or meeting with FireLight leader(s) and may lead to the removal of the child and/or the family from the group, either temporarily or permanently.

The FireLight Board retains the right to accept, deny or revoke membership at any time.
